Ayako Sakaino

Ayako is a certified instructor of Urasenke School of Tea. She is active in promoting Japanese culture through teaching the tea ceremony and collaborating with other Japanese art forms to enhance the atmosphere of the experience.

"For Sakaino, the tea ceremony is an important connection to her heritage. She first learned its deliberate preparation and serving rituals when she was 18. At the time, she says, every young Japanese woman was expected to learn the tea ceremony, or flower arrangement or calligraphy; it was part of learning how to be a good hostess.

She studied the tea ceremony for seven years, eventually earning her qualifications to teach it. But then life got in the way and it wasn't until she immigrated to Canada 40 years ago that her interest was reinvigorated.

"It was my doorway to Japanese culture," says Sakaino.

The measured movements involved with the tea ceremony are a form of meditation, she says. "When I am doing tea ceremony, I cannot think about anything else."

Eri Fukase Luman - Jikiden Reiki Shihankaku

Japanese calligraphy is a culture in pursuit of perfectly beautiful characters. In this pursuit of beauty, an emphasis is placed on the results. However, in my eyes, calligraphy is much more than that. There is something more significant than the results. It is the way to meditation.

At the moment that you connect with the movement of the brush, your spirit pours forth and you feel the convergence of this life energy. The feeling of oneness between the brush and self emerges from a state of nothingness and creates the feeling of eternity in that moment.

In this connection with the moment, you will touch your inner soul through unrestrained self-expression. Meditation Calligraphy is a time of reunion with yourself yet unknown.

Transcending time and space, the purpose of this way is to become acquainted with the forgotten inner self.
